Disgraced West Linn Doctor David Farley has been charged by the State of Oregon with sexually abusing three unnamed victims.
In court on Friday, Farley pleaded not guilty to four counts of first-degree sex abuse, five counts of second-degree sex abuse, and two counts of unlawful penetration. His bail was set at $500,000. The judge said she will allow him to continue living in Utah, but he waived extradition rights and will be back in Oregon for the trial and hearings.
More than 100 women and children, all former patients of Farley, sued him and accused him of sexually abusing them under the guise of medical care. A civil lawsuit is pending, and the patients are seeking almost $1 billion in damages. It is unclear if any of those alleged victims are the same ones in the charges brought by the Oregon Department of Justice against Farley.
A number of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit were in court Friday, the atmosphere was emotional with hugs and tears shed outside of the courtroom.
Acting on advice from lawyers, the plaintiffs in the lawsuit declined to speak to the media outside the courthouse. Some of them may be called as witnesses at Farley's trial. More charges could still be added in the case as well.

In 2022, Clackamas County District Attorney John Wentworth failed to secure charges from a Clackamas County grand jury. In a press release, Wentworth's office then requested that the attorney general take over and investigate the case. Former patients have criticized how Wentworth’s office and West Linn police handled the case.
Both Wentworth and Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield declined interviews. Rayfield sent a press release that included a statement from Wentworth.
“The former patients had developed trust with the DOJ and placed their confidence in its review,” Wentworth's statement reads. “I have dedicated my entire career to victim advocacy and the pursuit of justice.”
"Survivors and their families have shown remarkable courage throughout this process. This indictment reflects our commitment to justice. Our focus now—and always—is on the people whose lives were upended by this abuse," Rayfield's statement reads. "When someone in a position of authority uses that position to harm others, it strikes at the core of who we are as a community. We owe it to survivors to follow the facts wherever they lead and ensure that no one is above the law.”

Dignity4Patients Commentary: This case demonstrates how intertwined systems—religious authority, medical trust, investigative inadequacies, and corporate defenses—can all converge to conceal abuse; whether intentional or not. A striking reminder by Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfeild; when a figure of authority abuses their position of power to harms others, it affects not just the individual survivor, but strikes the very core of the community. We owe it to survivors to follow the facts wherever they lead and ensure that no one is above the law.
This case once again further highlights the importance of public facing inquiries into the #systematicfailures that allow perpetrators to operate unchecked.
