A heart surgeon who sexually assaulted five female staff members working on his department has been described as "arrogant and crude".
Amal Bose, 55, from Lancaster, molested a number of his female staff members while in position as a senior consultant and head of the cardiovascular unit at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.
The victims described "a culture of inappropriate behaviour that went unchallenged" due to Bose's seniority in the department.
Bose was the head of the cardiovascular department at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. Prosecutor Huw Edwards told a hearing at Preston Crown Court that staff members described Bose's behaviour as being 'beyond workplace jokes'. He said "It was sexual targeting of females - and mainly younger females".
Bose was convicted of 12 counts of sexual assault relating to five female members of staff at the hospital between 2017 and 2019.
One victim told the court she was groped by the surgeon as she scrubbed in for surgery, while another time he rested his head on her shoulder, making her worried what her colleagues would think about the nature of their relationship.
Bose was convicted of 12 counts of sexual assault relating to five female staff members between 2017 and 2022. Edwards said one woman said Bose pulled down her top to expose her chest and bra, while another said he groped her breast as he took a pen from her pocket, and he would often stand too close to her and call her "fresh meat" amongst other inappropriate comments.
She said she had reported the incident to a colleague but it was "never spoken about again".
Another victim said Bose's behaviour was "a well-known fact", and new employees were warned about him.
She said Bose touched her inappropriately "every time she saw him", causing her to "develop a terrible sickness record" as she altered her working pattern to try and avoid him.
Bose was convicted of 12 counts of sexual assault relating to five female members of staff at the hospital between 2017 and 2022. He was cleared of two other counts.
The medic, who claimed his actions were ‘only flirting’ and ‘banter’, was sentenced to six years in jail.
Senior Crown Prosecutor Sacha Coyne said: “Amal Bose was in a trusted position at the hospital. He abused this by creating a toxic environment, making sexual comments, and sexually assaulting five women who worked at the hospital.
“He appeared not to recognise the serious and lasting impact his actions would have, describing his behaviour at trial as “workplace banter”.
“I would like to thank the women for supporting the prosecution, and I hope now Bose has been brought to justice they can find some closure.
“This case should send a clear message to perpetrators of sexual abuse, the Crown Prosecution Service will not hesitate to prosecute abusers, regardless of the position that the abuser holds in society.”

Dignity4Patients Commentary: This case shows that doctor's hold a trusted position at the hospital; they should not abuse this power to create a toxic working environment, wherein despite knowledge of the abuse, new employees were warned and no other actions taken. When those charged with a #DutyOfCare turn a blind eye, opportunists take advantage to commit crimes.
