Former Tasmanian GP extradited from NSW to face historical sexual abuse charges in Hobart

By Jake Grant - ABC News - 25.04.2025 - [AUSTRALIA] - [Michael Antony Welch] A former Tasmanian doctor who was extradited from New South Wales on historical sexual abuse charges has not applied for bail.


Michael Antony Welch, 64, appeared in the Hobart Magistrates Court this morning charged with three counts of rape and three counts of indecent assault.


Police allege the abuse occurred when Mr Welch was a registered GP in Tasmania over two decades ago.


The rape charges date back to 1993 and allegedly relate to a 15-year-old.


It's alleged the indecent assaults occurred between 2004 and 2005. Police allege the victim was 18 at the time.


In court on Friday, Mr Welch chose not to apply for bail.


He will reappear in court on Monday.
