Doctor Charged With Multiple Sexual Assaults and Record Tampering

A Middlesex County physician previously accused of sexual contact with patients is now facing additional charges after a state investigation uncovered further alleged offenses in multiple counties.
Dr. Gurvindra Johal, 57, of Colonia, has been charged with two counts of second-degree sexual assault, 11 counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, and one count each of falsifying or tampering with records and destruction, falsification, or alteration of records related to medical care. The announcement was made by state Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin.
The new charges stem from alleged incidents in Essex and Monmouth counties, expanding on previous allegations from Middlesex County. Authorities say Johal was first charged in 2023 after a patient at Amboy Urgent Care in Perth Amboy reported inappropriate touching. The investigation soon revealed additional victims who claimed similar misconduct at the same facility, as well as others who alleged sexual assault.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, the investigation found more victims in urgent care centers in Newark and Freehold. Johal is accused of sexually assaulting and inappropriately touching patients during medical exams at these locations. The charges further allege that Johal attempted to falsify medical records, including altering documentation to indicate a medical assistant was present during an examination when that was not originally the case.
