A disgraced Co Derry doctor today admitted possessing images and videos of children being sexually abused.
Standing in the dock of Downpatrick Crown Court, Alan Trevor Campbell (40) entered guilty pleas to each of the 11 charges against him, comprising five of possessing and six of making indecent images of children.
The indictment covers a time span between October 17, 2014, and January 13, 2022.
The registered GP, who is from Silverbrook Park, Newbuildings, Derry, admitted that he had images and videos classed as categories A (the most serious) B and C.
None of the background facts or details of the case were opened in court. Following Campbell’s guilty pleas, prosecuting counsel Breige Gilmore confirmed that the defendant has a clear record. Defence counsel Cameron Faulkner agreed that apart from a pre-sentence report from the Probation Board (PBNI), the defence team would not be obtaining any other type of report ahead of the plea and sentence.
Highlighting that Campbell’s admissions trigger the requirements of the police sex offenders’ register, Judge Geoffrey Miller KC ordered that Campbell be served with the relevant documentation and sign the register “before he leaves”.
Turning to Campbell, Judge Miller told him that if he has not heard from the Probation Board in the next two weeks, to contact his legal advisers to arrange an interview. He warned “failure to attend without good reason means that I will sentence in the absence of a report”.
“You can rest assured that that will not be in your best interests,” Judge Miller told the defendant.
Freeing Campbell on continuing bail until June 24, Judge Miller remarked: “These are very serious offences. All options will be open to the court.” If you have been affected by any of the issues raised in this article and were abused in state run medical and health facilities, you can contact Dignity4Patients, whose helpline is open Monday to Thursday 10am to 4pm.
