Child psychiatrist sued by the parents of girl he raped

By Ali Bracken- Sunday Independent- 11/01/2026- [Dublin, Ireland]- [Amirul Arif Bin Mohd Yunos]

A child psychiatrist who raped and sexually assaulted a 15-yearold girl at his HSE workplace is being sued by her family. Amirul Arif Bin Mohd Yunos, of Hollystown, Dublin 15, was sentenced in December 2024 to eight-and-a-half years in prison on eight charges of sexually abusing and grooming the teenager.

He pleaded guilty to six counts of engaging in a sexual act with a child under 17, one count of sexual exploitation of a child and one of meeting a child for the purpose of sexual exploitation.

Documents lodged in the High Court show that the parents of the girl, as well as the young woman herself, who is now aged 18, are suing the doctor and the HSE.

The doctor was formally assigned to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (Camhs) in Clonskeagh, Dublin.

Freda Murphy, a partner with PBN Litigation in Dublin, confirmed that she is representing the victim’s family.

Ms Murphy also said that she wrote to solicitors representing the HSE last week to remind them it has been requested to submit its “notice of particulars”, which is part of the process of lodging its defence.

Once this takes place, the victim’s family will be in a position to lodge various medical reports outlining the physical and psychological impact the sustained abuse had on the child and her wider family.

The case, first revealed in the Sunday Independent, exposed the extent of the sexual abuse that the girl suffered at the hands of the child psychiatrist.

As well as raping her, Yunos sometimes used a blindfold and also suffocated and choked the girl to muffle her screams.

He called the abuse “biology lessons” and sent her violent pornography to “study” for their next encounter, his sentencing hearing heard.

Some of this abuse took place at the doctor’s Camhs office in Clonskeagh, where he treated some of the State’s most vulnerable children.

In a previous interview with the Sunday Independent, the girl’s mother said: “He would tell her that her body was a ‘form of payment’ for his therapy service. He said to her that he enjoyed seeing blossoming girls suffer in his hands as it made him feel more dominant and powerful.

“He threatened her that if she told people, no one would believe her because of his position in society. “She would ask him if it was rape, and he would say, ‘No, rape is violent’, but it was violent, it was rape. She was left bleeding sometimes. She has had to have medical procedures because of internal damage he did to her during rape.”

The girl tried to take her own life three times after the stress of the experience.

With two years already served and an automatic right to 25pc remission, Yunos will be due for release in just under four years. He will then be deported to his native Malaysia, where his wife — who the court heard has stood by him — lives, as does his extended family.

The psychiatrist was known to the girl’s parents, and when they asked him for a recommendation for their daughter, who was suffering from mild anxiety after Covid, he offered to give her therapy.

After one sanctioned therapy session Yunos had with the then 14-year-old, he contacted her privately, saying he wanted to continue to help. He told her not to tell her parents.

Over the course of the next year, he began to groom her.

“He brainwashed and groomed her for over a year before the sexual abuse began,” her mother said. “He got her to the point where she felt as though he was the only one she could rely on and trust. He made her feel that if she didn’t give him what he wanted, or if she told anyone, she would lose all mental support from him.”

The sexual abuse began in 2023 when she was aged 15 and continued throughout that year. The offences took place in his sister’s car, his home, the girl’s home and his Camhs workplace.
